High school allows time for our children to pursue their interests, testing them out to see if that interest is something they would like to pursue in the future either on their own or in a formal college course. I received several Seven Sisters courses as a prize and I took the opportunity to pick things that my high school age son was interested in learning about and we hadn’t covered in our courses yet.
He picked Introduction to Psychology from a Christian Perspective and the Advanced Guide to Short Story Writing –Myth and Fantasy.
Introduction to Psychology from a Christian Perspective:
This is a downloadable product that I printed and spiral-bound for my son. We opted to use a block of six weeks for him to complete the course and he worked independently with the materials. This was a very straight forward course with easy to understand narrative and follow-up questions. The questions covered the material in the reading but there were extra suggestions for just about each chapter. These suggestions were the meat of the material and a way to personalize the learning. For instance, one chapter had him pick from a list of popular movies to watch and then write a response using the prompts provided. The chapter on sleep had him keep a sleep quality journal for a week and then analyze what he learned from the experience. This took the learning to a higher level and allowed for more thinking and writing to happen.
We would meet periodically and discuss his thoughts on his learning and since this is a subject I knew little about it was nice to hear how much he was gleaning from his independent study.
I would recommend this course of high school students who are interested in learning about psychology from a Christian perspective. It is well worth the $24.99.
Advanced Guide to Short Story Writing – Myth and Fantasy
My son is an avid reader and writer. This course allowed me to download and print the materials for a short unit on creative writing. There are five week’s of lessons included in the unit and at the end the student writes their own myth or fantasy using what they learned in the previous lessons. My son struggled with coming up with an idea but once he got started it fell together into a short story I could not put down. The course is meant to be used by the student independently and then there is a grading rubric for both the student and the parent to complete and then compare.
I think this course was a perfect fit for our needs and if you have a young writer looking to expand their skills into the myth and fantasy genre…this is a great mini-course of you to use with them. With a price tag of $6.99 you can’t go wrong.
There are many, many more courses available from Seven Sisters that you might like to look into for your family.
